two-up

come in, spinner

20 HP

Every call, two pennies go up. Two heads and the stake doubles; two tails and it's gone; one of each is odds, and they go straight back up. A random gate with ratchets, a stake that climbs and crashes, and the crowd round the ring.

The TWO-UP panel: black, with a great old skull in gold dots from the name to the mark, on cracked ground that runs out to the edges. Its two eye sockets are two round windows of bare circuit board, each a coin's face in a ring of twelve. SPIN, a lit button, stands on its crown and TAKE, a black button, between its eyes, with five small round windows under it. LEAN, the big knob, sits below in a staircase of seven small windows up each side, then the STAKE switch and its five dots and the ROAR at the tip of the snout. Down each side: CALL and LEAN, the ODDS and HEAT jacks over their knobs, ODDS and STAKE, HEADS and TAILS; TAKE and MONEY either side of the snout. two-up at the top, daylight noise at the bottom.

Turn a knob: drag it or tap either side of it, roll the wheel over it or use the arrow keys; a double click puts it back. STAKE clicks from stop to stop the same ways. SPIN and TAKE are buttons: toss by hand, or take the money. The patches step on by themselves until you touch anything.

What you hear is a rack played by TWO-UP: hats on HEADS and ODDS, a snare on TAILS, a bass on STAKE, the crowd from the ROAR. It's all made in the page.

The tosses, the stake, the lights and the crowd here are TWO-UP's engine as it's designed, running in your browser. The clock, the drums, the bass and the drone are a stand-in for the rest of a rack.

The toss

Two heads is HEADS, two tails is TAILS. One of each is odds: the ODDS gate fires and they go straight back up a quarter of a call later, so a run of odds is a ratchet. Five in a row and the spinner loses.

The stake

Every head doubles the stake, from a semitone up to sixty-four. Tails wipes it to nothing. STAKE comes out at 1 V an octave, so a bass played from it climbs a run of heads and crashes on tails.
