standstill

it stops when you're right

20 HP

A tuner with a real wheel in it, turning at the note's own speed and lit by your oscillator's own wave. Dead on, the wheel looks stopped. Then it closes the loop and holds a drifting oscillator there for good, or seven cents off, or beating in time. Put a thumb on the wheel and the oscillator comes with it.

The STANDSTILL panel: black, with a worn wooden cart wheel in gold dots, its twelve spokes running out from a real turning wheel in the middle, six rings of small windows round a hub. BEAT at the top, LOOSEN and TEMPERAMENT either side above the wheel, LAMP, MEANT, AGAINST, CLOCK and the OFFSET and BEAT jacks down the sides, NOTE, TRUE, ROLL and CRAWL out below them, FIXED and HAND at the foot's corners and OFFSET the big knob between them. standstill at the top, daylight noise at the bottom.

Turn a knob: drag it or tap either side of it, roll the wheel over it or use the arrow keys; a double click puts it back. TEMPERAMENT clicks through five stops the same way. Hold the wheel: press it and keep pressing, further out to drag it harder, flick it to spin it up; or tab to it and use the arrow keys, Enter to stop it. The patches step on by themselves until you touch anything.

STANDSTILL makes no sound. What you hear is two drifting oscillators in a rack, the second one on STANDSTILL's FIXED. All made in the page.

example patches

The wheel, the loop and how the marks move are STANDSTILL's engine as designed, running in your browser, the wheel's weight and drag from sums on paper; the two oscillators stand in for yours.
