she walks your song

20 HP

Whatever you play into it is laid out as a course along a lit line: every hit, swell and drop-out an obstacle of one of four kinds, each with its own gate. A small walker jumps them with a chirp of her own. Stumble too often and she wears down; clear a long run and she blooms.

The RIBBON panel: black, gold dots of a deep rocky chasm at night, its walls rising up both sides, a soft cone of light falling from the top onto the middle. Across the middle runs a long window of bare circuit board, a line of sixteen dashes with a small block, a ring, a notch and a wave at each, and at its centre a round window of a core, two rings and six petals under an arc. KEY, START and SKILL at the top, CLOCK and START's gate under them, TANGLE, the big BUSY knob and SKILL, the LEFT and RIGHT ins over the line; BLOCK and PIT under it, VOICE, STUMBLE and FORM, LOOP and WAVE, LEFT, CHIRP and RIGHT at the foot. ribbon at the top, daylight noise at the bottom.

Turn a knob: drag it or tap either side of it, roll the wheel over it or use the arrow keys; a double click puts it back. START is a button: press it. The patches step on by themselves until you touch anything.

A dark song in C minor through RIBBON, her chirps in it. Listen plays the patch from its top.

Everything RIBBON does here is its engine as designed, running in your browser. The song is a stand-in rack.

Listening

It hears whole mixes, not one drum at a time: a kick under a bass, a snare in a full song, a pad swelling in under everything. Each event it hears goes on the course as an obstacle, sorted by what it is.
