mob

they'll follow you anywhere

20 HP

Lead with a beat and a crowd takes it up: a handful stamping along late, then hundreds, then thousands, stamping and clapping as one and shouting on the hits. Change the beat and they lose faith. Grow them past the edge and stop, and they riot until you raise your hand.

The MOB panel: black, gold dots of an empty stadium stand at night, tier on tier, the floodlights' masts up the edges. Across the top, from under the name down to the RAISE button, fifty-nine small windows of bare circuit board, each a person's head and shoulders, the near ones bigger, the crowd fanning out wider towards the back. STOMP in at the top left and CLAP at the top right, FERVOUR and HORN down the left, CHANT and FAR down the right, FERVOUR's and CROWD's jacks beside the crowd, the RAISE button under it with LEAD and RAISE's jack either side, the CROWD knob in the middle, FEET and HANDS out down the edges, RIOT and SIZE out beside the knob, LEFT, LEADER and RIGHT out at the foot. mob at the top, daylight noise at the bottom.

Turn a knob: drag it or tap either side of it, roll the wheel over it or use the arrow keys; a double click puts it back. RAISE is a button: hold it for silence, let go and they come back on the next hit. The patches step on by themselves until you touch anything.

A dark industrial groove in E minor, its drum machine leading MOB, a bass and a pad under it. Listen plays the patch from its top.

Everything MOB does here is its engine as designed, running in your browser. The drum machine, the bass and the voice are a stand-in rack.

Leading

MOB listens for your hits and finds the cycle in them, the stretch of beat that repeats. Every hit that lands where they expect it wins more of them over, and they play the cycle back with you: at first a handful a little behind you, then, as they get it, on the beat, a cycle ahead. A hit they didn't expect, or one they expected and didn't get, costs you people.

The crowd

The riot and the hand

Grow them past the edge, nearly as many as CROWD allows (less the higher FERVOUR is), and stop leading: within a cycle they riot. They carry on without you, the last cycle you played going round faster each time, louder, more joining, the back pushing forward. Nothing you play stops it.
