not alone in there

20 HP

Whatever comes in at HOST, other voices grow inside it: an octave down, a whisper, a fifth, one singing backwards, one high, a crowd. The longer it sounds the deeper they get, until the host is gone. COMPEL throws them out.

The MANY panel: black, gold dots of an old hand mirror lying face up, its beaded frame round the middle of the panel and its handle down the spine to the foot. The mirror's glass is a window of bare circuit board cracked from the middle: twelve shards round HOLD's big knob, twelve outside them, and a rim of whole glass. HOST in at the top left and COMPEL's gate at the top right, BELOW and BACKWARDS down the left, WRONG and WHISPER down the right, HOLD's and WRONG's jacks under the glass, the COMPEL button on the handle, VOICES and HOST out either side of it, DEPTH and TAKEN out under them, LEFT and RIGHT out at the foot. many at the top, daylight noise at the bottom.

Turn a knob: drag it or tap either side of it, roll the wheel over it or use the arrow keys; a double click puts it back. COMPEL is a button: press it to throw the voices out. The patches step on by themselves until you touch anything.

A slow song in A minor, a voice singing into MANY, a pad and the drums under it. Listen plays the patch from its top.

Everything MANY does here is its engine as designed, running in your browser. The singer and the song are a stand-in rack.

The hold

MANY is a pitch shifter. Every voice is the host itself, pitched, sounding with it at once; what's different is that they grow. While the host sounds the hold deepens and they come in one by one, the low one first, then the whisper, the fifth, the backwards one, the high one and the crowd, each louder and stranger as it deepens. Past halfway the host fades under them. At the end it's gone, and it stays gone until COMPEL.
