how long have you been out here

20 HP

A quad LFO with a real lens in a tall pane. One beam goes round the room, and the window stays black until it crosses your eye: stand left and you see it early, right and you see it late. What it falls on comes back through the same glass and into your patch. Leave it out there long enough and it starts looking for you.

The KEEPER panel: black, banks of glass prisms in dark brass in gold dots either side of a tall arched pane of real lens, fine rings in it; the big TURN knob and RELIEF under it; BEAM, FOG, MADNESS and CHARACTER either side of them; ten jacks down the outer columns.

Turn a knob: drag it or tap either side of it, roll the wheel over it or use the arrow keys; a double click puts it back. CHARACTER clicks through five stops the same way. Move across the stage: that's where you're standing, and on a screen you touch, where you last tapped. Hold the pointer down on the pane: a hand on the glass. From the keyboard, tab to the pane: the arrow keys walk you along the room, Enter or Space puts your hand on it.

KEEPER makes no sound. What you hear is four dark voices, a bell and the sea, in a rack it's patched into. All made in the page.

The lamp, the beam and what it finds are KEEPER's engine as designed, running in your browser. How the real lens throws the beam and how far it sees are from sums on paper. The voices stand in for yours.
