hush

don't make a sound

20 HP

Something out there hunts by sound. Under the line your mix passes untouched. Over it, a clicking starts in the dark, turns towards the loud sound and comes nearer with every one. Stay loud and it strikes: the moment torn apart, then dead silence.

The HUSH panel: black, gold dots of a narrow path of pale sand through dark grass at night, running up from the foot to vanish under the big HUSH knob, the night black above it. Across the top a string of thirteen round bulb windows hangs on a gold wire under the name; the path's middle stretch, between HUSH and the FIRE button, is a window of bare circuit board in eight bands. LEFT and RIGHT in near the top, LEAP and STILL either side of HUSH, COVER and COUNT under them, CLICK and TEAR lower, HUSH's and FIRE's jacks beside the path, HEARD and STRIKE, CLICKS and NEAR out, LEFT, SILENT and RIGHT out at the foot. hush at the top, daylight noise at the bottom.

Turn a knob: drag it or tap either side of it, roll the wheel over it or use the arrow keys; a double click puts it back. FIRE is a button: press it. The patches step on by themselves until you touch anything.

A quiet loop in F minor with one loud snare a bar, through HUSH. Listen plays the patch from its top.

Everything HUSH does here is its engine as designed, running in your browser. The loop is a stand-in rack.

The line

Under the line nothing happens at all: what comes out of HUSH is what went in, to the bit. The path down the middle shows your level, and flashes when a sound gets to its far end.
