hoard

20 HP · effect

A build-up and drop machine for any signal. Every gate at KICK saves a pot, up to eight; CAST spends them all at once on the sound running through it, and the drop is as big as what you saved.

The HOARD panel: black, with two hands in gold dots above a row of eight jar-shaped windows of bare circuit board standing on a gold shelf along the foot. White labels: IN L and IN R at the top corners, KICK and CAST under the name, LENGTH, SIZE and LEAK across the panel, CLOCK and STEAL, FIRE over the switch in the middle with EARTH and THUNDER either side of it, POTS and CASTING, OUT L and OUT R at the bottom corners and CAST over the button between them. hoard at the top, daylight noise at the bottom.

Turn a knob: drag it, roll the wheel over it or use the arrow keys; a double click puts it back. MAGIC throws left, up or right with a click on its words or either side of it, and CAST is a button to press.

The build and the spells are HOARD's own. The drums, the bass and the lead going through it are made in the page as you listen.

The hoard, the build and the spells here are HOARD's engine as it's designed, running in your browser. The drums, the bass and the lead are a stand-in for the rest of a rack.

Saving up

The hoard is the row of eight jars along the foot of the panel. Every gate at KICK drops a pot into the next one, lit from the left in the colour of the spell to come. With all eight full there's no room for another, and the newest shimmers. Nothing is spent until you cast.

The spell

CAST spends every pot at once on the sound running through. The more you saved, the bigger and longer the spell: one pot is a flicker, a full row the biggest thing it does. The spent pots flare white-hot and go out one by one, newest first, the last as the spell lets go and the signal comes back dry. Cast again during a spell and what you've saved since goes on top.

The build

While the pots fill, the sound already leans toward the spell to come, a little more with every pot, so saving up is the build and the cast is the drop. You hear it from about three pots.
