fifty

don't let it drop

20 HP

A function generator with one rule. Once the needle passes the line it's armed, and from then on it must never drop below it. Keep it up with pushes, a fresh start or a voltage held over it; let it fall through and it blows.

The FIFTY panel: black, with a speedometer set in a scratched, riveted dashboard in gold dots, a steering wheel's rim arching across under it and its hub at the foot. The gauge's chrome ring holds a dial of 25 ticks of bare circuit board round the big LINE knob, a lamp window under it. PEDAL and GO at the top corners, PUSH and CHARGE beside the dial, RISE and FALL under them with their jacks, CRUISE and LINE's jack either side of the LOOP button; ARMED, BLAST, END, NEEDLE and TICK out along the foot. fifty at the top, daylight noise at the bottom.

Turn a knob: drag it or tap either side of it, roll the wheel over it or use the arrow keys; a double click puts it back. LOOP is a button: press it to loop the needle, press it again to stop. The patches step on by themselves until you touch anything.

What you hear is a rack played through FIFTY: a dark groove whose filter, lead or pitch rides the needle, a tick on TICK, a crash, a boom and a burst of drums on BLAST, a pad while it's armed. All made in the page.

The needle, the line, the blasts and the lights are FIFTY's engine as designed, running in your browser; the groove and its sounds stand in for a rack.
